Having issues joining a Zoom meeting on a lab PC? These are the settings we used while testing Zoom on lab PCs, along with some basics to check. If you're still having trouble after going through this guide, contact us using the links or phone number at the bottom of the page.
Headset and Audio
Check these basics related to the headset and/or audio:
- The headset you are using should be plugged into the PC on the back of your monitor (this is fairly obvious, but it is easy to miss). Try plugging it into a different port, and let us know if it does—we may need to clean or fix the port.
- Any mute switches on the headset may need turned off. Our headsets have mute switches and a volume slider around halfway through the cable.
- The headset should appear in and be selected with a checkmark in the audio settings (click the time, then the arrow next to the volume control). Most of our headsets appear as "USB Audio Device: USB Audio 0,0" or something similar. If it doesn't appear, try another headset or contact us for help.
- While on the above screen, make sure the microphone isn't muted or turned down under Input.
Zoom
If all of the above appears to be in order, check the following:
- Make sure your microphone is not muted in the lower left.
- Double check that Zoom has mic and camera permissions using the icons in the address bar. They should be set correctly by default on student accounts, but they may have been changed:
- On the 'Join' screen or in the meeting, click the small arrow next to the Mute button, then make sure both Microphone and Speaker are set to Same as System:
When you talk, you should see the microphone light up green. If that's not the case, you still can't be heard by the other party, and you've already gone through the steps in the above section, contact us for help using the information below.
