If you are using a laptop, look for a Number LockNumLock, or NumLk key on your keyboard. If you have one, press it once and try typing again.

 

Many Windows laptops, including many of our staff PCs, have 'virtual number pads' on their keyboards that can be switched on and off with this key. This can be useful when entering data, but less so when trying to type.
